English Electric, and their subsidiary Stephenson and Hawthorne at Darlington made numerous diesel locomotives during the late 1950s for export but also as part of British Railﾒs massive modernisation programme when fleets of steam engines were being replaced nationwide. Photographed by Walter Nurnberg who transformed industrial photography after WWII using film studio lighting techniques.
